Planting spring bulbs?

I live in south central PA...supposed to be in the 60's this week.To late to plant daffofils, crocus' etc.I think they should do O.K....any advice?..Thanks!!!

Planting spring bulbs?
Yes you can plant bulbs during the january thaw, they need at least four days to establish roots before going dormant for the rest of winter.
Reply:Shouldn't be too late if you can work the soil. Cover well with mulch to protect against any further frosts. Or you can store in a cool dry place until a few weeks or so before you plan to plant. Place bulbs in a refrigerator drawer for 3 to 4 weeks before planting. If possible put in a seperate compartment by themselves, so forgotten fruits or vegetable won't rot (which causes a gas that may be harmful to the bulbs). I use these two methods on a regular basis and I have never had any trouble with the bulbs not blooming. Sometimes (depending on the flower bulbs) they will grow but not bloom until the second year. Good luck and happy planting!
Reply:If you can work the soil, you can plant your bulbs. They may come up a bit if it stays warm for a while, but they'll figure things out on their own once spring actually arrives.

Good luck :-)
Reply:As long as the ground isn't frozen, you can plant them. We planted some on New Year's Eve, just before we got 6 inches of snow.

The only problem that you will possibly run into is that the soil is very wet this time of year. When we dug the hole for our bulbs, it started filling up with water. Also if you are planting them in an arrangement, the clumps of dirt will disturb them when you fill the hole back in.

What we did was to place a layer of newspaper in the bottom of the hole and place an inch or two of dry potting mixture over it. We then arranged the bulbs and covered them with a couple of inches of compost (you could also use more potting mix) before filling the hole back up with the dirt. It came out slightly mounded, but that will help a little with keeping the hole from filling up with more water from the rain and snow.

Reply:put the bulbs in your fridge crisper drawer about six weeks before your spring.. then plant them...the cold chill in fridge will help speed things up and you will have spring bulbs
Reply:Not too late to plant them, I have done so quite often when I found them on closeout in January. They do need about 8 wks of cold to bloom tho so may bloom late the first year, after that they will be on track. As long as you can get a trowel in the ground!

Trouble with keeping anything in the fridge like that is that if you keep any fruit in there also, the ripening fruit puts off an ethane gas that will kill the flower buds in bulbs.
